Creating a treasure hunt!

We were inspired by the treasure hunt we followed yesterday and have been very busy yesterday and today creating a treasure hunt for Miss Worsley! We put a message that said "If you want some treasure you must follow this map!" and a treasure map that we had drawn into a bottle and delivered it to Miss Worsley.

The map showed the pirate ship and said "start here" - when Miss Worsley went to the pirate ship she found the first clue!

The clue told her to go to the mermaid lagoon, where she found the next clue.

The clue said "Go to the water. Watch out for sharks!" Miss Worsley had to be very careful not to get eaten by the sharks when she got the next clue!

The clue said "Walk through the swamp. Be careful of the crocodiles!" Miss Worsley squelched her way through the swamp and found the next clue. She managed to avoid the crocodiles - just!

The next clue said "Go to the forbidden mountains if you are brave enough!" Miss Worsley was very brave and followed the map to find the forbidden mountains.

The final clue said "Go to the gloomy forest if you want to find the treasure!" Miss Worsley did want the treasure, so she went past the sign that said "Danger! Do not enter!" and into the gloomy forest...

In the gloomy forest she found an X marking the spot! She began to dig...

and found a treasure box!

Inside the treasure box was... lots of treasure!!

Exciting adventures!

This morning we saw that the pirates had taken the treasure we left for them - would they let Funky Monkey go?! We looked in the water tray and found... another message in a bottle!

The pirates had left us a map and a letter that said we could get Funky Monkey back if we followed their map!

We talked about what maps were and what they were used for and looked at the map from the pirates using the visualiser. We worked out which places were on the map - we could see the bark area, the playground, the school, the church, the car park and the garden!

We went outside and followed the map to find our first clue. It was in the bark area and it told us to walk through the trees and to the wooden doors, where we found another clue!

We followed clues around the bark area and across the playground, where we had to find the keys to a big metal gate!

When we'd opened the gate we had to walk down past Year 3 and 4's classroom and look in the windows to see a clue in Miss Worsley's office! The clue told us to go through the gate towards the church and look for a big cross.

At the monument we found another clue, which directed us to the school gardens. We checked the map to see where we were and then went into the gardens, looking for Funky Monkey!

We found a final clue that told us Funky Monkey was near water. We looked at the pond and saw this treasure box!

We looked inside and found... Funky Monkey! He had written us a note, thanking us for rescuing him and telling us that he'd stolen some treasure from the pirates! Inside the treasure chest were gold coins with chocolate inside - we enjoyed eating them!

We were very pleased to have Funky Monkey back and took him back to our classroom. Lots of us made up our own treasure maps this morning and talked about all the different things we'd drawn. Some of them had an X to mark the spot where our treasure is buried!

Making treasure!

This morning we got a reply from the pirates - they said they would let Funky Monkey go, but only if we sent them lots of treasure! We decided to make some treasure for the pirates and talked about different ways we could do this. We cut circles from gold and silver paper for coins and medals, covered bottle lids with gold and yellow paper and used paint and glitter to make lots of sparkly jewels!

This afternoon we made a treasure chest to put all our treasure in and wrote some labels and notes to go with it. We're going to send it off to the pirates - hopefully tomorrow they will let Funky Monkey go!

Funky Monkey in kidnap drama!

This morning we found a message in a bottle in the water tray - it was from Funky Monkey! He wrote to tell us that he's been kidnapped by pirates and wants us to rescue him! We talked about how we could rescue Funky Monkey. Lilly said we should go on a pirate ship to find him, and Matthew and Jamie thought we should get some swords to fight the pirates. Trystan said we should use binoculars to find the ship and Aaron added that we should use binoculars and clipboards so we can try and find another message and write down what we found out. Lilly said we could write to the pirates - we agreed that this was a good idea. Ollie said we could say "Give Funky Monkey back" but Jamie thought we should write something nicer if we want the pirates to give him back - "Please can we have Funky Monkey back." Fallon said Funky Monkey wants to come home and we should write "Please let Funky Monkey come home because he might be tired and hungry and thirsty."

This afternoon we are going to write our letters to the pirates - will they let Funky Monkey go?!

The Pirates Next Door!

Today we read a book called The Pirates Next Door. It's about a family of pirates who move into a town - but the people who live there don't want pirates as neighbours! They think they're dirty and scruffy, they fire cannons from their ship, and they were digging up the roundabout in the middle of the night! Only Matilda was friendly to the pirates. But when the pirates headed back out to sea, they left a special present behind for everyone, which made them change their minds about whether pirates were really all that bad..!

We talked about how people were feeling in the story and why most of the people in the town didn't want the pirates around. We discussed whether it was fair to try and get someone thrown out of a place just because they were different and you didn't like them, and how the pirates might have felt about being treated so unkindly.

We realised that lots of our values link with the story, mostly because the people in the town were not showing them! They weren't caring or showing friendship, they didn't want to share their town, they didn't trust the pirates, they weren't co-operating and all working together to make the town a nice place to live, and they weren't tolerating the pirates.

We decided that if some pirates moved in next door to us, we'd be very kind, friendly and tolerant. If anyone moves next door to us, or near us, or into our class - we are going to show them kindness and tolerance, even if they are a little bit different to us - just like Matilda did!

The Night Pirates!

This morning we read a story called The Night Pirates. It's about a boy called Tom who goes on an adventure with some girl pirates to steal some pirate treasure! We talked about the way the story was written, including similes "quiet as mice" and "stealthy as shadows" and questions, such as "But where were they going?"

One group worked with Mrs Batson and came up with the next part of Tom's adventure, which they acted out. It was an exciting story about travelling to Dinosaur Land and tiptoeing past some sleeping dinosaurs to steal the treasure!

One group worked with Miss Ayres and wrote the first part of a story as a group about Tom's adventures. Our target was to use a simile in our story and some questions, just like in the story The Night Pirates! This is what we wrote:

One sunny day the day pirates went to Tom's house. Fast as cheetahs they climbed up the wall to Tom's bedroom. They crawled under the bed and hid something. What do you think it was?
When Tom was looking for his toys under his bed he found a piece of paper. It was a treasure map! What do you think Tom did with the treasure map?

Then we continued the story ourselves. Here are the next part of our stories!

He went to pirate island. He found treasure. He stayed on the island. (Harry)

He found footprints from the pirates but Tom also found coins. Also there could be bandits. But what is that? It might be a parrot. But Tom was the sleepiest boy in the world. (Grace)

Tom found a parrot in his room. The girl pirates hid the treasure in his cupboard! But one of the coins was wooden. Tom threw the wooden coin in the bin! (Maddie)

Tom went on a boat to pirate island. He stole treasure from the pirates. He found a bracelet. The next day he stole more treasure. He took it home. (Lucy)

Tom was looking for treasure and he found treasure. It was lots of gold coins. (Matthew)

He tried to find pirates. One grown up pirate guarded the treasure. He sneaked under. The rest is a mystery! (Aaron)

Challenging maths!

This morning Harry, Maddie, Grace, Lucy and Aaron were doing some challenging maths work on partitioning. They learnt that when you partition a number you split it up. They were partitioning two digit numbers by splitting them into tens and units. Look at their fabulous work! Well done all of you.
