Treasure maths

Today we've been practising our addition skills using pirate treasure coins! We had different amounts and had to work out how much treasure we'd have if we stole some treasure from another pirate! Although we could count the coins to see how many there were, we were practising working out what the calculation would be and then how to solve it by counting on in our heads. So, if Jamie had 5 coins and he stole 3 from Maddie, the calculation would be 5 + 3, and by working that out in our heads we know it's 8! We did have a big calculation to solve when we wanted to work out how many coins we had altogether, so we put them altogether and counted them.

Tomorrow we're going to be practising our subtraction skills - will we be able to work out how much treasure we've got left after some is stolen by another pirate?!
