Today our travels around the world took us to... Greece! There were lots of clues when we came in this morning about which country we were off to today. There were photos of blue and white houses, a blue and white flag, some olives, pita bread, feta cheese and hummus, some maps, some white sheets and pictures of people wearing them wrapped around themselves and some writing that looked different to our own. There was also music playing as a slideshow of pictures played on the whiteboard. Where were we off to? It was Greece!
Today we listened to Greek music and did some Greek dancing, ate and talked about different Greek food, made togas for ourselves like the Ancient Greeks wore, made pictures with different kinds of blue and white materials, learnt some Greek words and copied some letters from the Greek alphabet. Miss Ayres also showed us some of her photos from Greece and we learnt that dolphins and turtles live in the sea there.
We also learnt about the Olympics, which began in Olympia in Greece! We went over to the penfold this morning for the Great Gaddesden Olympics where we each took part in one of three events - discus (with a frisbee), standing jump and a running race. We took it in turns to use the measuring tape to find out how far people had jumped or thrown the discus. We also took it in turns to record the results. Back in the classroom we made gold, silver and bronze medals and presented them to the people who came first, second and third in all the events. Some of us also made more medals for ourselves!
