Christmas Science!

This afternoon we have been doing some Christmassy science! We made... candy cane goo!

We used cornflour and slowly added water to it. We stirred it in and explored the way it felt and how we could move our fingers through it. Then we made some more cornflour mix with some red food colouring in and swirled it into the white to make red and white swirls! As we kept stirring, the red and the white mixed together to make pink. To make it smell like candy canes we added some peppermint essence.

It was fun to explore the texture of the goo and see what happened when we mixed it with our hands. We could move our fingers through it quickly, but it was harder when we tried to move them slowly.

We had lots of fun learning and exploring in science this afternoon and got rather messy too!!

Christmas carols!

This afternoon we went to see the rest of the school in their Christmas performance. There were fantastic carols (including some terrific solos!), readings of the Christmas story and Year 1 dressed up as all the people from the nativity story.

We all loved hearing the big children's singing and seeing them tell the Christmas story. This supported our own learning, as in R.E we have been learning to retell the Christmas story.

Well done to everyone in the performance!

The Christmas Story

This afternoon we have been learning about the important people in the nativity story. We retold the story, thinking about who all the important people were. Then we looked at our nativity figures and worked out who they were. We could see which was baby Jesus straight away! We knew Mary was in blue, and we worked out who the kings were "because they're holding presents for the baby." We also knew who the shepherd was "because he's got a sheep." That meant the other man was Joseph.

We placed the nativity figures so they were around baby Jesus, then recreated the picture ourselves! Some of us were the characters and some of us were in charge of moving people and telling them how to stand. We had to think about whether we were standing or kneeling, if we were holding something and what we were doing with our arms.

Here is the picture of our nativity figures and us making the same picture!

Christmas Play!

This morning we performed our Christmas play, The Sleepy Shepherd, to the whole school! We tried hard to use our biggest voices and did really well at remembering all our lines and songs.

We're looking forward to showing all the mummies and daddies tomorrow!

Our Class Assembly

Yesterday was our class assembly all about space! We shared with the rest of the school and with mums and dads some of the things we have learnt over the last few weeks. This included showing rockets, moon buggies and a collage of the sun, star prints, star constellations and star gazers and our work on planets. We created colourful planets of our own and wrote about them as well as creating and writing about creatures that live on our planet. We also sang four of the songs we have been learning about space which show our understanding of space, the moon landing, gravity and the order of the planets.

Super work everyone!

Preparing for our play!

This week we are busy preparing for our class assembly tomorrow and our Christmas play next week.

This morning we printed sparkly stars onto black paper to create the backdrop for part of our play.

This afternoon we were learning how to speak clearly so that people can understand us, such as by looking at the people we're talking to, speaking in a loud, clear voice and not making any other noise when we're talking.

We are going to use these skills in our assembly tomorrow and in our Christmas play performance next week!
