Blast off!

Today we started our new topic - space! We've been exploring our new space station role play area and blasting off into space in our rocket! The people at mission control also have a very important job to do, making sure everything is safe and communicating with the astronauts.

This afternoon Reception were learning all about questions. We found some cards with writing on around the room and had to work out whether what was written was a question or not. Were we being asked something, or told something? We talked about how questions need answers and practised saying different sentences, some questions and some not, and thought about whether they need answers. Is "The rocket is flying into space" a question? What about "What can you see in space?" We looked at the cards again and sorted them into two groups, questions and statements. We looked for what was different between the sentences and Fallon noticed that the questions had a question mark not a full stop at the end.

We talked about some different question words, e.g 'how', 'what', 'when' and 'where' and how we could use them in our questions. Then we talked to our talk partner about some things we would like to find out about space. We made a list of questions and over the next five weeks we're going to try and find the answers!

Here are our questions about space:
What is in space?
Are there people in space?
How big is the moon?
Where is the moon?
Does the moon move?
Do stars move?
Are there trees on other planets?
Where is our planet?
How hot is the sun?
How far away is the sun?

Keep a look out on our blog for all the exciting work we're going to be doing on space this half term!
