What's in the sky?

This morning we have been thinking about what's in the sky. We had one minute to talk to a partner and come up with as many things as possible that might be in the sky.

We said:

  • stars
  • the sun
  • the moon
  • planets ("Jupiter and Mars" said Reece)
  • birds
  • people (we talked about how people might be in the sky and what they might be in...)
  • aeroplanes
  • helicopters
  • hot air balloons
  • rockets
  • clouds
  • bats
  • rainbows

We thought of actions for some of these things and compared the way they move. We kept our arms straight when they were the wings of a plane, but flapped them when we were being a bird. Helicopters were tricky as we had to try and move one arm behind our back and another above our head. When we were hot air balloons we had to move really slowly, showing how they float through the sky.

Then we talked about whether these things were natural or man-made and what this means. We had to move into the right place when things were called out to show whether we thought it was something that is naturally in the world, like stars and clouds, or something that has been made or built by people, like aeroplanes and rockets.

Some of us made some fantastic pictures in our Play and Learn time of things seen in the sky. Some of us used blue paper and some of us used black - why do you think we had two different colours of paper for the sky?

We also used the playdough to make things seen in the sky. We had some gold glitter to add to the playdough and we used this to make golden stars using the playdough cutters!
