Exploring direction

This week we are learning all about wind. Today we learnt about directions and where wind can blow from and to. First we learnt the words North, East, South and West. Some of us had heard these words before - we knew about the North and South Pole, Rhys said "South America" and Maddie said "the Wild West." We played a game to practise using these words. We put cards with North, East, South and West on the ground outside. Miss Ayres stood in the middle and counted to 10, and we had to move quietly and stand by one of the cards. Then Miss Ayres called out a direction - North, East, South or West, and everyone who was stood there was out. We kept going until we had a winner! During our first game Maddie and Brianna were the winners - well done girls! When some people played it later in Play and Learn time, Aaron took over as the person in the middle and did a great job calling out the different directions.

We looked at a compass and learnt that the needle inside always points north. We explored the compasses and tried to work out where north was, and where east, south and west were. Well done to Grace, who was very impressive in being able to use the compass and work out not only where north was but where east, south and west were.

We made a weather vane so we could work out which direction the wind was blowing. When we took it outside the arrow spun around in the wind. Lucy said "it's blowing south" - she remembered from earlier which direction was south. Well done Lucy!
