Exploring wind

This week we are learning all about wind. We talked about what wind looks and sounds like and how we might know if it's windy outside.
"It whistles." (Maddie)
"It blows the trees." (Harry)
"The leaves might come off the trees." (Lilly)
"It might break the trees if it's strong wind." (Grace)

We looked at some new things that we are going to put in our outside area and talked about what might happen to them in the wind. There were coloured twirling sticks that spin around and wind chimes which Fallon said "are jingling." Matthew said "there's some in the bark area that are wooden." We also looked at a windmill and said it would spin around in the wind. It had two sizes and Aaron said he thought the bigger one would take longer to spin around because it's bigger and the smaller one would be quicker. Harry said that if the wind was blowing that way the windmill would spin that way, but if it was blowing the other way it would spin the other way. Great thinking boys!

Then we went outside with our new things and with things from our windy day box. We explored whether we could make the ribbons move if there wasn't any wind, and found that if we twirled them around or ran with them we could make them move. Aaron said "I think it's a bit windy because I can see the green tree moving a bit." We stood very still and felt the gentle breeze on our faces.

Then we got the bubble wands and mixture out and talked about what might happen to bubbles if there wasn't any wind. Would they stay still in the air, or fall to the ground, or still float up into the sky? Some people thought they would stay still if there wasn't any wind to blow them, but Olivia said "no they won't stay still, they'll still float. Bubbles go onto the ground after they go into the sky." We explored the bubbles and found they did still float in the sky. Some popped quickly on the ground, but some flew up really high, over the roof of the school!

We made some wind chimes of our own - can you see the things we have used? Do you think they will make a good jingling noise when it's windy?

We have also made some lovely kites! We had to choose the right shaped triangles to fit into the diamond kite pattern. We also made beautiful tails for our kites. Do you think kites will fly very well if it's not windy?
