Exploring snow

We read the book Jolly Snow and talked about the different ways the toys made snow. Then we explored some ways of making snow of our own! We used clear bottles of water and added different things to them. First we looked at what the things were, making sure we knew their names and what they are used for. Then we talked about whether we thought it would make realistic snow - would it look like real snow? - and what we thought would happen to it in the water. We used sugar, soap powder, desiccated coconut and glitter. Here are some of the things we said:

"The coconut will make good snow because it's white" - Rhys
"Sugar looks just like snow so it'll be good in the bottle" - Lilly
"The sugar's melted in the water" - Lexi (The sugar didn't actually melt in the water, it dissolved - this is a tricky thing to understand!)
"The soap flakes will stay on the top of the water because that's what the coconut did... They've melted in and turned the water like milk" - Harry
"The glitter didn't dissolve" - Lucy (fantastic work Lucy, well done for using the word 'dissolve')
"The glitter made the best snow because it just floated up and down" - Olivia
"The sugar was worse because it disappeared and you can't see it" - Aaron
"I liked the glitter because it was sparkly and beautiful" - Fallon
"The glitter was best because it was sparkly like real snow" - Maddie
"The coconut made the best snow because when Mrs Batson shook it it looked like real snow."
