Exploring frost

This morning we have been talking about frost. We talked about our experiences of frost and what we think it looks and feels like. We said:

"It's cold" - Lexi
"It might come out in winter" - Aaron
"It's like snow but crunchy" - Harry
"When we're sleeping Jack Frost comes and does everything that's frosty" - Trystan
"I've seen it on the grass" - Maddie
"Sometimes it's on windows" - Jamie
"It's white" - Emily
"It's on top of the roof" - Lilly

We looked at pictures of frost patterns and the shapes they made. Then we made some frost patterns of our own using icing sugar and food colouring. First we mixed the icing sugar with water to make a runny paste. Then we spread that over a piece of card with a paintbrush.

After that we dipped the end of a matchstick in food colouring and put a tiny dot onto the white paste and watched what happened.

The colour spread out to make beautiful frosty patterns! Lucy said "they look like snowflakes."
